One of the slightly more daunting, but also exciting, tasks that starts to creep up in the third trimester, is packing your hospital bag in preparation for the big event – labour and birth.
Labour and birth are a tricky duo as you have no way of knowing how long they will last. You could be in hospital for a few hours or you could be in for a few days. This makes packing your hospital bags for the occasion a little bit mind boggling at times. ‘Will I need this?’, ‘Will I need that?’. My top tip is prepare for every eventuality. You will have much more peace of mind if you know you have every situation covered.
It can often seem that sitting down to make a list of everything you will need is harder than the actual packing itself – even at 6+ months pregnant! Aptaclub are a very helpful bunch and have an extensive checklist that can be found here. There is even a downloadable version. How handy!
Here are my essentials for packing your hospital bag for labour and birth:
Birth plan and maternity notes
Maternity pads (the super thick ones)
Disposable maternity knickers (not the most attractive of things but believe me they are worth it)
Socks and slippers
Nightie for labour and birth (I recommend a cheap one you can throw away for obvious reasons!)
Pyjamas/loungewear for after birth
Wash bag with toiletries (treat yourself to some lovely new travel sized goodies. Shampoo,
conditioner, body wash, face wipes, toothbrush, toothpaste)
Going home outfit
TENS machine if you are using one
Pack of cotton pads (or wipes if you wish. Water Wipes or another pure water type would be most
suitable for newborn skin)
Going home outfit
Hat (some hospitals do not let babies leave without one)
iPad or equivalent (download some of your favourite programmes)
Money for car park
Chargers for phones etc
Water bottle with straw (makes is easier to sip whilst lying down)
Drinks and healthy snacks
Extra pillow (those hospital pillows aren’t always the most ‘plump’ of pillows)
Ear plugs and eye mask
Can you believe that after all my organising, packing and re-packing I ended up forgetting a brush? Disaster! So I will end on that note. Do. Not. Forget. Your. Brush.
