There are a few things you can count on to instantly bring back memories of summer at the beach. A delicious and lemony crab cake, a fruity cocktail, or the faintest whiff of sunscreen is enough to transport anyone to days spent lounging on the surf. But at best, those are fleeting reminders.
If you want to keep the feel of a beachy summer with you all season, even when you can’t make it to the shore, embrace a straw bag.
NY Mag recently stated that nothing says summer quite like a straw bag. “Praise the versatility of straw bags,” wrote contributor Molly Lamoureux. “They’re light, they’re summery, they’re easy to clean, and while they’re of course perfect for carrying sunscreen and towels, there’s no reason to limit their use to the beach.”
That’s all true, but better still, straw bags are no longer just for picnics and days on the sand, according to a recent trend alert from Yahoo. A straw satchel or tote is the perfect accessory whether you’re in the office all day or just out and about running errands.
Granted, the office-appropriate options aren’t your classic straw beach bag, and the chic new look exemplifies the perfect balance between whimsy and structure. They’re square, cylinder, trapezoid, and even oval, providing a wide variety of options to choose from. They’re also a significant step above the quality of your local box store. Lyst’s collection of bags reveals that there are dozens of top names putting out their own twist on the style, from budget-friendly styles by Sondra Roberts, to outrageously extravagant pieces from Fendi.
It’s no surprise the added boost in design quality (and price) attracted celebrities like Alexa Chung and Reese Witherspoon. Daily Mail recently spotted Witherspoon out and about in Los Angeles sporting blue floral pants and a simple top. And even though her outfit was otherwise simple, her straw bag stood out.
The bag was shaped somewhat like a picnic basket and served as a festive addition to her flowery ensemble. The blue top flap on the purse complemented the other navy accessories in her outfit, and the gold magnolia logo added a bit of polish to the overall look of the bag. It was undeniably stylish, cute, and oozed summer. If you can accomplish anything close to her straw bag look, and you can’t go wrong.
Maybe you need a beachy pick-me-up throughout the week, or maybe you just love the look. Either way, a straw bag can certainly perk up your mood, and your outfit. Get one for yourself before the season ends!
